India Achieves Milestone in Domestic Air Travel
In an unprecedented achievement, India recorded its highest number of domestic flyers in 2024, with 161 million passengers taking to the skies within the country. This marks a 6% increase from the previous year's 152 million passengers, as per the latest data released by the DGCA.
Market Leaders and Growth Trends
IndiGo continued to dominate the domestic market with a 61.9% share, followed by the Air India Group at 28.4%. Akasa and SpiceJet also made significant contributions with 4.6% and 3.7% market shares, respectively. December 2024 witnessed the highest monthly domestic air traffic, with nearly 15 million passengers, an 8% increase from the previous year.
Future Projections and Infrastructure Development
Union aviation secretary Vumlunmang Vualnam highlighted the remarkable growth in air passengers from 160 million to 380 million over the last decade. With ambitious goals, India aims to reach 3.8 billion passengers by 2047, supported by plans to expand the number of airports from 159 to 350. This growth is fueled by India's large population, burgeoning middle class, and robust economy, alongside a solid foundation of airport infrastructure.
