Tata Motors' Punch Overtakes Maruti Swift as India's Best-Selling Car in 2024

SUV Trend Propels Tata Punch to the Top

In a historic shift in India's automotive market, Tata Motors' Punch has dethroned Maruti's Swift to become the best-selling car in 2024. This marks the first time in over four decades that a Maruti model is not leading the sales charts, signaling a significant change in consumer preferences towards SUVs.

Tata's Punch beats Swift to be top seller

The Punch, an entry-level SUV-styled small car, has seen its popularity soar, selling 2 lakh units in 2024. Its aggressive pricing, starting at Rs 6 lakh, and availability in petrol, petrol-CNG, and electric variants have made it a hit among Indian consumers. Maruti's WagonR and Ertiga followed closely, but the Swift, last year's top seller, didn't even make it to the top five.

Changing Consumer Preferences

Shailesh Chandra, MD of Tata Motors' passenger cars and electric businesses, highlighted the company's success, attributing it to the strong preference for SUVs. "2024 was our fourth consecutive year of record sales, with SUV volumes growing by 19%," he said. This shift towards SUVs has seen traditional hatchbacks like the Swift lose their dominance, with only one hatchback model making it to the top five in sales rankings.

Market Dynamics and Future Outlook

Amidst a market slowdown, Tata Motors and other car companies reduced prices to attract buyers. Meanwhile, Maruti has been expanding its SUV lineup, which now contributes significantly to its total sales. This evolving market scenario underscores the growing appetite for SUVs in India, a trend that is reshaping the automotive landscape.
