Proton e.MAS 7: A New Chapter in Malaysian Automotive Industry
Kuala Lumpur witnessed the launch of Proton's inaugural electric vehicle, the e.MAS 7, marking a significant step towards Malaysia's goal of boosting EV and hybrid EV adoption. Majority-owned by Malaysian conglomerate DRB HICOM, Proton also has a 49.9% stake held by Chinese auto maker Zhejiang Geely Holding Group.
Competitive Pricing and Market Positioning
The e.MAS 7 is introduced in two models - basic and premium, priced at 109,800 Malaysian ringgit and 123,800 ringgit respectively. This move follows the entry of other major players like BYD, Tesla, and Stellantis in partnership with Leapmotor into the Malaysian market.
Government Support and Future Prospects
Malaysia aims for EVs and hybrids to comprise a fifth of new car sales by 2030, with a reported 112% increase in battery EV sales in the first half of the year. Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim expressed hope that future models like the e.MAS 7 could be manufactured locally, involving more Malaysian firms in EV production.
