Singapore vs Malaysia: A Social Media Debate on Which Country Does It Better

A Social Media Clash

A recent social media post by an American tourist and fitness influencer, AJAC, sparked a heated debate comparing Malaysia and Singapore. AJAC praised Malaysia for its English proficiency, tourist-friendly environment, safety, cuisine, parks, and affordable healthcare, garnering over 12 million views and 700 comments.

In response, Kit Sun Cheah, a Singaporean science fiction and fantasy writer, claimed that Singapore outperforms Malaysia in nearly every aspect, except for affordability and family culture. This assertion led to a fierce online debate, with Malaysian netizens challenging his claims.

Points of Contention

Several users highlighted Singapore's reliance on Malaysia for imports like durians, chickens, and water. Without natural water resources, Singapore imports water from Malaysia's Johor River. Others pointed out that despite an illegal ban, Singaporeans often drive to Johor Bahru, Malaysia, to purchase subsidized petrol.

The consensus among many is that Malaysia excels in affordability, a sentiment shared by many Singaporeans. A September poll showed that 55% preferred moving to Johor Bahru to avoid high costs in Singapore. However, some users noted that Malaysians also struggle with rising living costs and stagnant salary growth.

Migration for Better Opportunities

Facing stagnant salary growth at home, many Malaysians have moved to Singapore for better job opportunities. A government study revealed that three out of four Malaysians living in Singapore are skilled or semi-skilled workers, raising concerns about retaining talent in Malaysia.

Despite the challenges, many Malaysians find the higher income, better career prospects, and enhanced quality of life in Singapore outweigh the downsides, making the move worthwhile.
