Russia Blocks Viber Messaging App Amidst Crackdown on Social Media

Russia's Communications Watchdog Blocks Viber Messaging App

In a recent move, Roskomnadzor, Russia's communications watchdog, announced on Friday that it had blocked access to the Viber messaging app. This decision marks the latest addition to a series of social media services banned by Russian authorities.

The blockage, according to Roskomnadzor, is related to violations of rules aimed at preventing terrorism, extremism, and drug dealing. The statement did not provide specific details on how Viber was involved in these activities.

Rakuten Group, the owner of Viber, has yet to respond to a request for comment. Hiroshi Mikitani, the founder and CEO of Rakuten Group, previously highlighted Viber's role in countering Russian propaganda, stating that the app would block all "fake news and propaganda of Russia." Mikitani made these comments during a visit to Kyiv last year.

This action by Russian authorities continues a pattern of restricting social media platforms, raising concerns about freedom of communication and information in the country.
