IndiGo Challenges Air India: A New Era in Premium Corporate Travel

IndiGo's Bold Move into Business Class

India's largest airline, IndiGo, is set to introduce business class seating, marking a significant shift from its traditional economy-focused model. This move aims to compete directly with Air India's dominance in the premium travel segment. Industry analysts anticipate substantial benefits for passengers as both airlines, which collectively transport 80% of domestic travelers, expand their premium seating capacities.

"Increase in seats on the front end on domestic and select international routes is likely to disrupt pricing of business class and even premium economy," noted CAPA, an aviation consultancy firm.

IndiGo's Premium Class Plans

IndiGo's transition to a mixed cabin configuration will commence with premium seating on 20 daily flights between Delhi and Mumbai from mid-2024. The airline also plans to introduce business class seats on all 15 daily flights operating on the Delhi-Bengaluru route. By the end of 2025, IndiGo aims to have 45 aircraft operating with the new cabin product.

IndiGo vs Air India

While IndiGo does not offer complimentary lounge access and hot meals for business class travelers, it focuses on frequent flight choices, private comfortable seating, and reduced airport waiting periods. IndiGo's premium seating is priced at Rs 18,000-20,000, matching Air India's premium economy rates but significantly below business class fares. Air India, on the other hand, is safeguarding its position by utilizing Vistara aircraft and newly acquired planes on metropolitan routes.
