Vietnam's Durian Exports Plummet as Dragon Fruit and Banana Take the Lead Amidst Stricter Global Standards

Export Shifts in Vietnam's Fruit Market

Dragon fruit and banana have overtaken durian as Vietnam's top fruit exports, with revenues of $93.8 million and $71.8 million respectively, according to recent customs data. Meanwhile, durian exports have seen a dramatic 69% drop to $52.7 million, with shipments to China, its largest market, falling by 83% to $27 million.

Challenges Facing Durian Exports

The decline is attributed to stricter quality requirements in key markets like China, which has intensified inspections for carcinogens such as Auramine O, leading to delays. The U.S. and Europe have also imposed tougher regulations, including bans on certain chemicals and increased pesticide residue checks.

Domestic Market and Future Prospects

Despite these challenges, the domestic market remains stable, with high-quality durians fetching up to VND75,000 ($2.87) per kilogram. Traders like Manh Khuong are focusing more on local sales, though optimism remains for a rebound in exports, especially with the recent approval for frozen durian shipments to China and the upcoming main harvest season in June.
