Ukraine and EFTA Forge New Economic Pathways
In a significant move to bolster economic relations, Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal announced the signing of a comprehensive free trade agreement with the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) on Tuesday. This landmark deal introduces innovative chapters focused on e-commerce, support for small- and medium-sized enterprises, and enhancements in trade facilitation and government procurement.
Expanding Market Access and Integration
The agreement not only revises provisions on trade in goods but also liberalizes trade in specific categories, marking a pivotal step towards Ukraine's deeper integration into European supply chains. Prime Minister Shmyhal emphasized the strategic importance of this agreement in paving the way for Ukraine's economic future.
Trade Dynamics Between Ukraine and EFTA
Last year, trade between Ukraine and the EFTA nations—Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland—reached nearly €1.1 billion. Ukraine's exports were dominated by fats and oils, valued at €37 million, while EFTA's exports to Ukraine included €229 million in fish and seafood, €143 million in pharmaceutical products, and €77 million in arms and ammunition, showcasing the diverse economic exchanges between the parties.
