New Horizons for Ukraine-EFTA Trade Relations
In a significant move to bolster its economy, Ukraine, under the leadership of Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal, has inked a comprehensive free trade agreement with the European Free Trade Association (EFTA). This landmark deal introduces innovative chapters focused on e-commerce, support for small- and medium-sized enterprises, and refined terms on goods trade, among others.
Enhanced Market Access and Liberalization
The agreement not only updates market access for goods but also liberalizes trade in specific sectors, a step that Prime Minister Shmyhal believes "paves the way for deeper integration into European supply chains." This development marks a pivotal moment in Ukraine's economic strategy and its relationship with EFTA members.
Trade Volume and Key Exchanges
With trade between Ukraine and the EFTA—comprising Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland—reaching nearly €1.1 billion last year, the potential for growth is immense. Ukraine's exports, primarily fats and oils, totaled €37 million, while the EFTA's exports included €229 million in fish and seafood, €143 million in pharmaceuticals, and €77 million in arms and ammunition, showcasing the diverse nature of their trade partnership.
