Germany's Trade Surplus Rises to €17.7 Billion in February, Defying Expectations

Germany's Trade Surplus Climbs in February

In a surprising turn of events, Germany's trade surplus expanded to €17.7 billion in February, up from €16.2 billion in January. However, this figure marks a decrease from the €22.6 billion surplus recorded in February 2024 and fell short of analysts' forecasts, according to the Federal Statistical Office Destatis.

Exports and Imports Show Mixed Trends

Seasonally adjusted goods exports reached €131.6 billion, showing a 1.8% increase month-on-month and a slight 0.1% rise year-on-year. On the other hand, imports totaled €113.8 billion, with a 0.7% monthly increase and a more significant 4.6% annual growth.

Trade Within and Outside the EU

Exports to EU countries saw a modest 0.5% monthly increase to €70.2 billion, while imports surged by 2.3% to €58.6 billion. Trade with non-EU countries told a different story, with exports climbing 3.2% to €61.4 billion, but imports dropping by 1% to €55.2 billion.
