President Sheinbaum Celebrates Avoidance of New US Tariffs on Mexican Exports

Positive Developments in US-Mexico Trade Relations

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum expressed relief and satisfaction on Thursday following the announcement by US President Donald Trump that no additional tariffs would be imposed on Mexican exports. This decision marks a significant moment in the ongoing trade discussions between the two nations.

Strengthening Bilateral Ties Through Dialogue

During a press conference, President Sheinbaum highlighted the importance of dialogue and cooperation in fostering a "good relationship" between the US and Mexico. She emphasized the mutual benefits of resolving trade disputes through negotiation rather than imposition.

Focus on Aluminum and Steel

Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard announced Mexico's intention to seek improved terms for aluminum and steel exports to the US. This move is part of broader efforts to ensure fair trade practices and strengthen economic ties between the neighboring countries.

Previously, President Trump had introduced a 25% tariff on Mexican exports, which was set to take effect on April 2. However, he later clarified that goods covered under the United States–Mexico–Canada Agreement (USMCA) would be exempt from these tariffs, providing some relief to Mexican exporters.
