Air India Embarks on a Fleet Transformation Journey

Air India has taken a significant step towards modernizing its fleet with the receipt of the first upgraded Boeing 777-300 ER. This marks the beginning of a comprehensive refresh program aimed at enhancing passenger comfort and operational efficiency.

Delays Overcome with a Strategic Refresh

Originally slated for last year, the refurbishment faced delays due to global supply chain challenges. Opting for a heavy refresh, the airline has introduced new carpets, seat covers, and cushions, alongside repairs to broken seats, ensuring a rejuvenated travel experience.

Domestic and Ultra-Long Haul Deployment

The refreshed aircraft will initially serve domestic routes before being assigned to ultra-long haul flights, connecting destinations like Toronto, Vancouver, and several US cities. These flights, lasting over 14 hours, are a testament to the aircraft's enhanced capabilities.

A Glimpse into Air India's Fleet Strategy

With a total of 40 legacy wide-body planes, including 13 B777s and 27 B787s, Air India is on a path to complete the upgrade of all legacy wide-body aircraft by mid-2027. The airline's commitment to renewal is evident in its USD 400 million retrofit program, covering both narrow and wide-body aircraft.

Navigating Supply Chain Challenges

Despite the ambitious plans, Air India faces supply chain hurdles, from engine shortages to seat supplier issues. The airline's leadership acknowledges these challenges as a global phenomenon, expecting constraints to persist for the next 4-5 years.
