The government has approved the appointment of Poonam Gupta, Director General of the National Council of Applied Economic Research (NCAER), as the Deputy Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) for a term of three years. This position became vacant after M.D. Patra’s tenure ended in January.

Sources confirmed that the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) sanctioned Gupta's appointment for the role for three years, which will take effect from the date she joins the RBI. The joining date has not been confirmed yet.

Poonam Gupta's Extensive Background in Economic Policy

Economist Poonam Gupta, currently the Director General of NCAER, India’s largest economic policy think tank, has an extensive background in economic policy. She is also a member of the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister and serves as the Convener of the Advisory Council to the 16th Finance Commission.

Prior Roles and Academic Achievements

Prior to joining NCAER in 2021, Gupta spent nearly two decades working in senior roles at the IMF and the World Bank in Washington, D.C. She has taught at several prestigious institutions and holds both a Master's degree and a PhD in Economics from the University of Maryland, USA.
