Sheinbaum's Hope for USMCA Tariff Pause
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum expressed her hope on Tuesday that the United States would extend the tariff pause under the USMCA beyond the impending announcement of new tariffs by the US administration.
Mexico's Stance on Potential US Tariffs
During her daily press conference, Sheinbaum addressed questions about Mexico's possible alignment with other nations in response to US tariffs. She clarified that Mexico would not react immediately but would formulate a response by Thursday or Friday.
She highlighted that the majority of cars produced in Mexico are for export, with many sold domestically originating from China. She suggested that Mexico could manufacture low-cost cars domestically instead of importing them from China.
Migration Policies and US Relations
On the topic of stricter migration policies requested by Washington, Sheinbaum emphasized Mexico's stance: "We coordinate, but we do not subordinate ourselves."
