Mexican Leader Claudia Sheinbaum Advocates for Continued USMCA Tariff Pause Amid New US Tariff Announcements

Sheinbaum's Hope for USMCA Tariff Pause

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum expressed her hope that the United States will extend the tariff pause under the USMCA (United States–Mexico–Canada Agreement) beyond the expected announcement of new tariffs by the US administration. This statement was made during her daily press conference, highlighting the importance of the agreement for Mexico's economy.

Mexico's Stance on Potential US Tariffs

When questioned about Mexico's potential alignment with other countries in response to US tariff moves, Sheinbaum clarified that her government would not react immediately but would consider its actions carefully on Thursday or Friday. She pointed out the significant role of the automotive industry in Mexico, noting that most cars produced are for export, while many sold domestically originate from China. She suggested that Mexico could manufacture low-cost cars as an alternative to imports from China.

Migration Policies and Mexico-US Relations

Addressing stricter migration policies requested by Washington on the Guatemala border, Sheinbaum emphasized Mexico's stance: "We coordinate, but we do not subordinate ourselves." This reflects Mexico's commitment to maintaining its sovereignty while collaborating on international issues.
