Market Turmoil Amid Tariff Tensions
Wall Street witnessed a significant downturn in Monday's premarket session, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average dropping more than 300 points. This decline comes in response to US President Donald Trump's announcement that upcoming tariffs would apply to "all countries," sparking fears of a potential international trade conflict and economic downturn.
Upcoming Tariff Deadlines
President Trump is set to unveil reciprocal tariffs on April 2, with automotive tariffs following on April 3. These measures have raised concerns among investors about the impact on global trade relations and market stability.
Additional Threats to Russia
In a recent statement, Trump expressed frustration with Russian President Vladimir Putin, hinting at possible secondary tariffs of 25%-50% on Russian oil purchasers. This move is contingent on Moscow's cooperation in resolving the Ukraine conflict, adding another layer of uncertainty to the market.
The Nasdaq 100 and S&P 500 also experienced declines, falling 1.41% and 1.08% respectively. Meanwhile, the euro saw a slight decrease against the dollar, trading at 1.08142.
