Christine Lagarde Calls for Rapid Advancement in Digital Euro for Enhanced European Security

ECB President Advocates for Digital Euro Acceleration

European Central Bank (ECB) President Christine Lagarde has highlighted the urgent need to fast-track the development of the digital euro at both wholesale and retail levels to bolster Europe's resilience against vulnerabilities. Speaking to the European Parliament's Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs, Lagarde stressed the importance of prioritizing the establishment of a legislative framework to expedite the digital euro's implementation.

Lagarde pointed out significant shifts in the global financial landscape, including the United States' increasing focus on stablecoin regulation and the growing acceptance of cryptocurrencies. These developments, she argued, underscore the necessity for Europe to develop its own digital currency infrastructure to maintain sovereignty over its financial operations and reduce reliance on non-European solutions.

"To mitigate our current vulnerabilities, it's imperative that we establish comprehensive wholesale and retail payment infrastructures. This will ensure our operational independence and safeguard against external decisions that could impact our financial systems," Lagarde emphasized.
