US Treasuries: Foreign Investors Hold Steady in January, Japan and China Lead

Steady Foreign Holdings of US Treasuries

In January, foreign investors maintained their holdings of US Treasuries at a steady $8.526 trillion, showing no change from December but marking a 7.2% increase from the previous year, according to the latest data from the Treasury Department.

Japan and China's Increased Investments

Japan continued to be the largest non-US holder, boosting its Treasury holdings to $1.079 trillion. Meanwhile, China saw an increase in its holdings to $760.8 billion, recovering from December's 15-year low.

Shift in Foreign Acquisitions

Despite the steady holdings, there was a notable shift in foreign acquisitions of US securities. January saw a $48.8 billion outflow in total net foreign acquisitions of long- and short-term securities, a reversal from December's $103.2 billion inflow.
