Google Collaborates with MediaTek to Develop Affordable AI Chips for Future Tech

Google and MediaTek Join Forces for Next-Gen AI Chips

In a strategic move to innovate in the artificial intelligence sector, Alphabet Inc.'s Google is partnering with Taiwanese semiconductor giant MediaTek. Together, they aim to develop the next iteration of Tensor Processing Units (TPUs), starting next year. This collaboration was reported by The Information, citing sources close to the project.

Why MediaTek?

Google's decision to collaborate with MediaTek is influenced by the latter's robust relationship with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Limited (TSMC) and the cost-effectiveness of MediaTek's chips compared to those from Broadcom Inc. Despite past pricing disputes, Google plans to continue its partnership with Broadcom for co-designing chips manufactured by TSMC in Taiwan.

Division of Labor

In this project, Google will take the lead in designing the majority of the next TPU, including the processor. MediaTek, on the other hand, will focus on developing the input/output modules, which are crucial for connecting the main processor with peripheral components.
