Mexico Delays Tariff Decision Until April 2 Amid US Trade Tensions

Mexico's Strategic Pause on Tariff Decision

In a recent press conference, Mexico's President Claudia Sheinbaum announced that the country will hold off on responding to the United States' 25% tariffs on steel and aluminum until April 2. This decision comes as a strategic move to allow for comprehensive discussions among government officials on the best course of action.

Sheinbaum emphasized the importance of maintaining a trade agreement with the US without imposing reciprocal tariffs. "We hope that, given our trade agreement and the absence of tariffs from Mexico to the US, there will be no need for reciprocal tariffs," she stated, highlighting the ongoing dialogue between the two nations.

Open Dialogue for Future Trade Relations

The Mexican government's approach reflects a commitment to open dialogue and negotiation. "The dialogue is open," Sheinbaum asserted, signaling Mexico's readiness to engage in discussions to resolve trade tensions and foster a positive trade relationship with the United States.
