Ontario Premier Threatens US with Power Supply Cuts Amid Trade Dispute

Ontario Premier's Stark Warning to the US

In a bold move that could escalate the ongoing trade tensions between Canada and the United States, Ontario Premier Doug Ford has issued a stern warning. He stated that he would not hesitate to cut off electricity supplies to the US if necessary. This drastic measure could affect approximately 1.5 million people across Minnesota, New York, and Michigan.

"If the United States escalates, I will not hesitate to shut the electricity off completely. Believe me when I say I do not want to do this," Ford declared in an interview with CNBC on Tuesday. He further cautioned that he would increase the tariff on electricity exports to these states from 25% to 50% should President Donald Trump decide to intensify the trade war.

Background of the Trade Dispute

This warning comes in the wake of President Trump's announcement to double the tariffs on all steel and aluminum imports from Canada, raising them from 25% to 50%. This move has been seen as a significant escalation in the trade tensions between the two neighboring countries.
