Indian Railways Embraces Technology for Fair Promotions
In a significant move to ensure transparency and fairness in its promotion exams, Indian Railways has decided to implement Computer Based Tests (CBT) for all departmental promotions. This initiative aims to eliminate discrepancies and ensure a level playing field for all candidates.

Enhanced Security Measures
With the adoption of CBT, examination teams will receive candidate information just two hours before the test begins, ensuring maximum security. The question papers will be encrypted using 256-bit encryption, and all candidate interactions will be recorded for audit purposes. Regular audits of examination centers will also be conducted to maintain the integrity of the process.
Building on Past Success
The Railway Recruitment Board (RRB) has a proven track record of managing large-scale assessments, having successfully examined over seven crore candidates through CBT since 2015, without any instances of paper leakage or impersonation. This new directive builds on that success, aiming to further enhance the credibility of the promotion process within Indian Railways.
Addressing Past Challenges
This reform comes in the wake of a paper leak scandal uncovered by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) at the East Central Railway (ECR) in Mughal Sarai. The incident, which led to the arrest of 26 railway officials and the seizure of Rs. 1.17 crore in cash, underscored the need for stricter measures to prevent malpractice in promotion exams.
