How the US Became the Unrivaled Leader in Almond and Pistachio Imports to India

US Dominates India's Almond and Pistachio Market

In a striking parallel to China's dominance in the global electronics trade, the United States has taken a commanding lead in India's almond and pistachio imports. American almonds accounted for nearly 93% of India's almond imports last year, with a value exceeding $1 billion. Similarly, US pistachios captured about 84% of the market share. This surge is attributed to the growing health consciousness among Indians and their rising income levels, which have spurred demand for dry fruits beyond what local production can satisfy.

Rising Imports and Market Trends

From 2008 to 2021, almond imports to India have skyrocketed over 5.5 times, with pistachio imports also seeing a significant increase from 4,400 tonnes to around 13,500 tonnes. The American Pistachio Growers and Washington Apple Commission's India representative, Sumit Saran, highlights the role of aggressive marketing and health consciousness in this growth. American varieties, especially from California, have become prevalent in organized retail segments and e-commerce platforms, overshadowing local varieties.

Market Dynamics and Future Prospects

Despite the premium pricing of American almonds, their larger size and lower oil content have made them more appealing to Indian consumers, even as Asian variants offer lower prices. Recent trade deals have also allowed some supply from Australia at zero duty, and Chile remains a significant player. However, the US benefits from more organized suppliers and lower logistics costs. The trade dynamics are further influenced by the US's push for concessions in pecan nut shipments and a level-playing field with Australian almonds, amidst broader trade negotiations.
