Meta and UNESCO Collaborate to Revolutionize AI Translation for Underserved Languages

Meta Platforms Inc. and UNESCO Join Forces

In a groundbreaking announcement on Friday, Meta Platforms Inc. revealed its collaboration with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to develop advanced machine intelligence (AMI). This initiative aims to harness human reasoning for tasks such as translation, with a special focus on supporting 'underserved' languages in AI models.

Language Technology Partner Program

Meta is actively seeking partners for its Language Technology Partner Program. Participants are expected to contribute over 10 hours of speech recordings accompanied by transcriptions, more than 200 sentences of written text, and sets of sentences translated into various languages. This linguistic material will be integrated into AI models for speech recognition and machine translation, with the resulting technology being open-sourced and freely available to the public.

Open-Source Benchmark for Machine Translation

In addition to the Language Technology Partner Program, Meta announced the launch of an open-source benchmark for machine translation. This benchmark will evaluate AI translation models and will be accessible in seven languages, further advancing the field of machine translation and making it more inclusive.
