Meta and UNESCO Collaborate to Revolutionize AI Translation for Minority Languages

Breaking New Ground in AI Translation

In an ambitious move to bridge the linguistic divide, Meta Platforms Inc. has teamed up with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to pioneer advanced machine intelligence (AMI) capable of mimicking human reasoning for tasks such as translation. This initiative is particularly aimed at enhancing AI models for languages that are currently underrepresented in the digital world.

Call for Collaboration

Meta is inviting partners to join its Language Technology Partner Program. Participants are expected to contribute substantial linguistic resources, including over 10 hours of speech recordings with transcriptions, more than 200 sentences in written form, and translations of these sentences into multiple languages. These contributions will be instrumental in training AI models for improved speech recognition and machine translation, with the outcomes being open-sourced and freely accessible to all.

Setting New Standards

In addition to the partner program, Meta is introducing an open-source benchmark for machine translation. This benchmark is designed to rigorously evaluate the performance of AI translation models and will be available in seven languages, setting a new standard for accuracy and reliability in machine translation.
