Meta and UNESCO Join Forces to Revolutionize AI Translation for Rare Languages

Meta and UNESCO Collaborate on Advanced AI Translation

In a groundbreaking announcement on Friday, Meta Platforms Inc. revealed its partnership with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to develop advanced machine intelligence (AMI). This collaboration aims to enhance AI's ability to perform complex tasks like translation by incorporating human reasoning, with a special focus on supporting languages that are currently underserved in the realm of artificial intelligence.

Call for Partners in Language Technology

Meta is actively seeking participants for its Language Technology Partner Program. The initiative calls for contributions of over 10 hours of speech recordings, along with transcriptions, written texts of more than 200 sentences, and sets of sentences translated into various languages. This linguistic data will be integrated into AI models for speech recognition and machine translation, which will then be open-sourced and made freely available to the public.

Open-Source Benchmark for Machine Translation

In addition to the Language Technology Partner Program, Meta has introduced an open-source benchmark for machine translation. This benchmark is designed to evaluate AI translation models and will be accessible in seven languages, further democratizing access to advanced translation technologies.
