Meta and UNESCO Collaborate to Revolutionize AI Translation for Rare Languages

Breaking New Ground in AI Translation

In a groundbreaking initiative, Meta Platforms Inc. has announced a partnership with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). This collaboration aims to develop advanced machine intelligence (AMI) capable of translating languages using human-like reasoning, with a special focus on languages that are currently underserved by existing AI models.

Calling for Global Participation

To achieve this ambitious goal, Meta is inviting partners to join its Language Technology Partner Program. Participants are required to contribute significant linguistic resources, including over 10 hours of speech recordings with transcriptions, more than 200 written sentences, and sets of sentences translated into multiple languages. These contributions will be integrated into AI models for speech recognition and machine translation, which will then be made open source and freely available to the public.

Setting New Standards in Machine Translation

In addition to the Language Technology Partner Program, Meta has introduced an open-source benchmark for machine translation. This benchmark will evaluate the performance of AI translation models and will be accessible in seven languages, further advancing the field of machine translation and setting new standards for accuracy and efficiency.
