Meta Partners with UNESCO to Revolutionize AI Translation for Underserved Languages

Breaking New Ground in AI Translation

In a groundbreaking move, Meta Platforms Inc. has teamed up with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to develop advanced machine intelligence (AMI) capable of human-like reasoning for tasks such as translation. This initiative aims to bolster artificial intelligence models for languages that have been historically underserved.

Calling for Global Linguistic Contributions

Meta is reaching out to potential partners for its Language Technology Partner Program, inviting contributions that include over 10 hours of speech recordings with transcriptions, more than 200 written sentences, and sets of sentences translated into multiple languages. These linguistic resources will be integrated into AI models for speech recognition and machine translation, with the resulting technology being open-sourced and made freely available to the public.

Setting New Standards with Open-Source Benchmark

In addition to the Language Technology Partner Program, Meta has unveiled an open-source benchmark for machine translation. This benchmark will serve as a critical tool for evaluating AI translation models and will be accessible in seven languages, further democratizing the field of machine translation.
