Meta and UNESCO Join Forces to Revolutionize AI Translation for Underserved Languages

Breaking New Ground in AI Translation

Meta Platforms Inc. has taken a significant step forward in the realm of artificial intelligence by partnering with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). Together, they aim to develop advanced machine intelligence (AMI) capable of utilizing human reasoning for tasks such as translation. This initiative is particularly focused on supporting languages that are currently underserved in AI models.

Calling for Global Participation

In an ambitious move, Meta is seeking collaborators for its Language Technology Partner Program. Participants are expected to contribute over 10 hours of speech recordings, along with transcriptions, more than 200 written sentences, and sets of sentences translated into multiple languages. This linguistic material will be integrated into AI models for enhanced speech recognition and machine translation, with the results made open source and freely available to the public.

Setting New Standards

Beyond the Language Technology Partner Program, Meta has also introduced an open-source benchmark for machine translation. This benchmark is designed to evaluate the performance of AI translation models and will be accessible in seven languages, marking a significant milestone in the pursuit of universal language understanding.
