Mexico Strikes Back: Implements Tariff and Non-Tariff Measures Against US Tariffs

Mexico's Response to US Tariffs

In a bold move, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced the implementation of both tariff and non-tariff measures aimed at protecting Mexico's interests. This decision comes as a direct response to the United States' imposition of a 25% tariff on Mexican imports, a policy spearheaded by US President Donald Trump.

Defending National Sovereignty

President Sheinbaum firmly rejected the allegations made by the White House, stating, "We categorically reject the slander made by the White House against the Government of Mexico regarding alleged alliances with criminal organizations." She emphasized that any such alliances, if they exist, are more likely found within the United States, citing the sale of high-powered weapons to criminal groups as evidence.

Plan B in Action

Sheinbaum has directed the Secretary of Economy to activate "Plan B," a strategy that includes a series of economic measures designed to safeguard Mexico's interests. This plan underscores Mexico's commitment to defending its economy and sovereignty in the face of external pressures.

US Justification for Tariffs

The White House has defended its tariff policy, claiming that the measures are intended to encourage Mexico to cooperate more effectively in the fight against drug trafficking. However, Mexico views these tariffs as an unwarranted intervention in its domestic affairs and a challenge to its national sovereignty.
