Mexico Fights Back: Implements Tariff and Non-Tariff Measures Against US

Mexico's Stand Against US Tariffs

In a bold move to protect its national interests, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced the implementation of both tariff and non-tariff measures. This decision comes as a direct response to the 25% tariff imposed by US President Donald Trump on Mexican imports. Sheinbaum emphasized Mexico's firm stance against what she described as "slander" from the White House, particularly allegations of alliances with criminal organizations.

Defending National Sovereignty

Sheinbaum further criticized the US for its role in supplying high-powered weapons to criminal groups, referencing a January report by the US Department of Justice. She stated, "If such an alliance exists anywhere, it is in the arms depots of the United States." The President has directed the Secretary of Economy to activate "Plan B," a strategic response aimed at safeguarding Mexico's interests through various economic measures.

US Justification for Tariffs

The White House, on the other hand, defended its tariff imposition as a necessary step to pressure Mexico into greater cooperation in combating drug trafficking. This ongoing dispute highlights the complex dynamics of US-Mexico relations, with both nations standing firm on their respective positions.
