Impact of China's Import Ban on Thai Syrup
In December, China halted imports of syrup and premixed powder from Thailand, citing concerns over factory hygiene. This decision has left shipments stranded in Chinese ports, causing significant disruptions.
Thailand's Role as a Major Sugar Exporter
Thailand, recognized as the world's second-largest sugar exporter, was China's primary supplier of liquid sugar last year, exporting over 1.2 million tonnes to the country, according to Czarnikow, a supply chain services company.
Efforts to Resolve the Crisis
Todsaporn Ruangpattananont, President of the Thai Sugar Product Association, has reached out to the Thai government, urging for expedited negotiations with Chinese authorities. The urgency stems from the daily fines companies are incurring due to the stranded sugar shipments.
Rangsit Hiangrat, a director at the Thai Sugar Millers Corporation, has emphasized that Thai sugar factories adhere to certified standards and are prepared for inspections, highlighting the industry's commitment to quality and safety.
