Japan's Industrial Output Sees a Slight Increase in December Despite Annual Decline

Industrial Production Index Rises

Japan's seasonally adjusted industrial production index experienced a modest monthly increase of 0.3%, reaching 102.1 in December. However, when compared to the same month in the previous year, there was a noticeable decline of 1.1%, as reported by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) in their preliminary findings released on Friday.

Shipments and Inventories Show Mixed Results

The shipments index saw a slight uptick of 0.5% month-on-month, achieving a score of 100.3, yet it faced a 2.4% decrease year-on-year. On the other hand, the inventories index was recorded at 100.6, marking a 0.7% decrease from the previous month and a 2% reduction compared to December 2023.

Inventory Ratio Adjustments

Furthermore, the inventory ratio was noted at 106.2, demonstrating a 1.6% decrease on a monthly basis but a 1.9% increase annually, indicating fluctuating dynamics in Japan's industrial sector.
