Record-Breaking Year for Global Air Cargo Demand
In an unprecedented surge, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) has reported that global air cargo demand for the calendar year 2024 increased by approximately 11%, surpassing the record volumes set during the pandemic in 2021. This remarkable growth was driven by strong e-commerce activity and various ocean shipping restrictions, alongside airspace limitations on key long-haul routes to Asia.

December 2024: A Strong Finish
The year concluded with a robust performance in December 2024, with global demand 6.1% above December 2023 levels. Capacity also saw an increase, and cargo yields were significantly higher, indicating a profitable year for the air cargo industry.
Looking Ahead to 2025
As we move into 2025, IATA forecasts a moderation in growth to 5.8%, aligning with historical performance. Despite potential challenges from geopolitical shifts and policy changes, the economic fundamentals suggest another positive year for air cargo.
Regional Performance Highlights
Asia-Pacific airlines led the regions with a 14.5% year-on-year demand growth, while North American carriers experienced the lowest growth at 6.6%. European, Middle Eastern, Latin American, and African carriers also reported significant increases in demand and capacity, showcasing the global nature of this growth.
