Vietnam's Rice Exports Growth in Singapore
Vietnam's rice exports to Singapore have seen a remarkable increase of 28%, accounting for 28.25% of Singapore's total rice imports for the year. Despite this growth, Vietnam was overtaken by India and Thailand by the year-end, which held the top spots with export revenues of S$148.19 million and S$137.75 million, respectively.
Market Dynamics and Challenges
Singapore's rice imports grew by 10.73% from 2023 to S$456.2 million in 2024. Vietnam dominated in three rice categories: white rice (42.23%), milled or husked fragrant rice (65.73%), and glutinous rice (77.02%). However, the limited growth in white rice exports contributed to Vietnam losing its leading position in the Singapore market.
Strategies for Future Growth
Cao Xuan Thang, trade counselor and head of the Vietnam Trade Office in Singapore, highlighted the need for enhanced marketing strategies and branding initiatives. He pointed out that competitors like Thailand, India, and Japan have invested heavily in marketing and established partnerships with importers to promote their brands. Thang emphasized the importance of long-term planning and promotional efforts from Vietnamese businesses and rice associations to boost Vietnam’s competitiveness in Singapore’s rice market.
