India's Telecom Department Intensifies Crackdown on International Fraud Calls

India's Bold Move Against International Fraud Calls

In a significant step to combat the rising menace of international fraud calls, India's Telecom Department (DoT) has launched an innovative system known as the 'International Incoming Spoofed Calls Prevention System'. This initiative has successfully blocked 70% of spoofed calls, drastically reducing the number from 1.5 crore calls a day to approximately 5 lakh.

Adapting to New Challenges

Despite the initial success, fraudsters have adapted by using virtual private networks (VPNs), making it appear as though calls are originating from overseas. In response, the DoT is engaging in dialogues with international long distance operators and employing artificial intelligence (AI) to tackle this evolving threat.

Leveraging Technology for Greater Security

One of the technological advancements in this battle is the use of a facial recognition and AI-powered tool called ASTR. This tool has identified 78 lakh fraudulent connections and led to the registration of 365 FIRs against 1,900 points of sale for norm violations. Additionally, the DoT's analysis of 6.9 lakh Indian mobile users roaming in Southeast Asia since July 2024 has resulted in the blocking of around 2 lakh connections and 9,828 handsets suspected of being used in frauds.

Collaborative Efforts for a Safer Tomorrow

The establishment of a Digital Intelligence Platform has brought together 520 entities, including central security agencies, state police, I4C, GSTN, 460 banks, telecom companies, and WhatsApp, to share information related to the misuse of telecom resources. This collaborative effort marks a significant stride towards safeguarding the public from telecom frauds.
