UK Regulator Investigates Google's Market Dominance
The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) of the United Kingdom announced on Tuesday the initiation of an investigation into Google LLC's search services. This marks the first strategic market status designation investigation under the new digital market competition rules effective from January 1.
The CMA highlighted that Google is responsible for over 90% of all general search queries in the UK, emphasizing the critical need for effective competition in the sector. "A competitive market fosters innovation, enabling businesses to create alternatives to traditional search services. This includes leveling the playing field for new AI startups to compete with established players like Google," stated the watchdog. The CMA has until October to decide on designating Google under the new regulations and potentially imposing measures to reduce the company's market dominance.
