India-Nepal Trade Talks Open New Doors for Dairy Products
In a significant move to bolster trade relations, India and Nepal have engaged in discussions to facilitate the import of specific dairy products, such as whey and cheese, from India to Nepal. This development came to light during the India-Nepal Inter-Governmental Committee (IGC) meeting held in Kathmandu from January 10-11.
The Indian delegation, led by Commerce Secretary Sunil Barthwal, highlighted the challenges faced by Indian milk exporters in Nepal. In response, Nepal has agreed to consider the import of milk products that are not sufficiently produced within the country, marking a positive step towards resolving trade barriers.
Expanding Trade Horizons
Beyond dairy, the discussions also covered a comprehensive review of the Treaty of Transit and the Treaty of Trade, proposing amendments to existing agreements. The talks aimed at harmonizing standards and developing trade infrastructure, including the electrification of the Raxaul-Birgunj rail line, to enhance bilateral trade.
Furthermore, India has agreed to apply maximum axle weight limits for Nepali cargo vehicles transiting through the Kakarbhitta (Nepal) to Banglabandha (Bangladesh) route via Phulbari (India), adhering to Indian road transport regulations.
Strengthening Agricultural Trade
In a move to further agricultural trade, India has included Sal seeds and Chayote in its Plant Quarantine Order. Additionally, Nepal's request to include extracts of Jatamasi root, Sugandhkokila berry, Sugandhwal rhizome, and Timur berry in India's list of processed plant products has been accepted, paving the way for enhanced agricultural exchanges between the two nations.
