Vietnam's Durian Import Surge: A $11.8M Investment in Exotic Flavors

Vietnam's Growing Appetite for Durian

In an unprecedented move, Vietnam has allocated $11.8 million towards the import of durians, with a significant $3 million spent in November alone. This marks an 11-fold increase compared to the previous year, showcasing the country's growing fondness for this exotic fruit.

Most of these imports are small durians from Thailand, which have become a favorite among middle-income consumers for their unique taste and affordability.

Frozen Musang King Durians: A Premium Choice

On the other hand, Vietnam has also been importing frozen Musang King durians from Malaysia, renowned for their consistent quality. These durians are primarily used in the production of premium pastry products, further diversifying the culinary applications of this fruit in Vietnam.

Challenges and Opportunities in Durian Cultivation

Dang Phuc Nguyen, general secretary of the Vietnam Fruits and Vegetables Association, highlighted the challenges faced by local farmers in cultivating the Musang King variety. Unfavorable weather conditions and technical limitations have led many to shift their focus to other durian types that promise better yields.

Vietnam's Durian Export Success

Despite the surge in imports, Vietnam's durian export sector has not been overshadowed. The country achieved a remarkable $3.3 billion in durian exports in 2024, a $1 billion increase from the previous year. Durians now account for nearly half of Vietnam's total fruit and vegetable export revenue.

Looking ahead, Vietnam aims to boost its durian exports to $3.5 billion this year, contributing significantly to the ambitious $8 billion target for total fruit and vegetable exports.

This dynamic exchange not only enriches the domestic market but also positions Vietnam's durian industry as a formidable player on the global stage.
