Economic Growth Through Overseas Employment
Indonesia plans to send 425,000 workers abroad in 2025, a move expected to enhance the nation's economic growth by 0.52%, as stated by Indonesia's Minister of Migrant Worker Protection, Abdul Kadir Karding.
Past Achievements and Future Goals
In 2024, Indonesia successfully deployed 297,000 workers overseas, contributing 251 trillion rupiah in foreign exchange revenues and boosting economic growth by 0.36%. This initiative also reduced unemployment by nearly 4%, benefiting 7.47 million workers. However, the global labor market's demand for 1.35 million workers was not fully met, prompting the government to increase its 2025 target and intensify efforts to maximize overseas job opportunities.
Strategies for Enhancing Worker Competitiveness
Key strategies include improving workers' language skills, with a focus on English from elementary education onwards, and providing skill certification, safety training, and preparatory programs for prospective overseas workers. These measures aim to improve the competitiveness of Indonesian workers and reduce illegal labor practices and exploitation abroad.
Current Overseas Employment and Digital Solutions
Currently, about 5 million Indonesians are employed in over 100 countries, mainly in Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, and the Republic of Korea. However, a similar number are believed to be working overseas illegally. To address this, Indonesia has developed the SISKOP2MI system, a digital platform designed to protect the rights of Indonesian migrant workers and streamline protective services.
