Durian Mania Sweeps China: A Culinary Revolution Fueled by the King of Fruits

The Durian Craze in China

China's catering industry is embracing the durian frenzy, launching 'everything + durian' promotions to capitalize on the fruit's soaring popularity among the youth, as reported by the South China Morning Post.

A Shenzhen restaurant has captured the internet's attention with a buffet featuring over 200 durian-inspired dishes, ranging from porridge to pancakes and cakes, priced at 199 yuan (US$27.26) per person.

Consumer Enthusiasm

Su Yuru, a Shenzhen-based white-collar worker, shared her excitement about the durian buffet, highlighting the fruit's sweet and filling nature. Durian has become a staple at family gatherings and corporate events, reflecting its growing appeal.

Social Media Buzz

Topics such as 'durian barbecue' and 'durian buffet' have garnered over 1.24 billion views on Douyin, China's version of TikTok, showcasing the fruit's viral status.

Market Growth

Despite economic pressures, the demand for durian-infused food and beverages is on the rise. Guangxi Xuan Ma Food has seen its durian-flavored cake sales skyrocket from 800,000 yuan in 2019 to over 10 million yuan in 2023.

Innovative Offerings

Durian has also made its way into milk tea, becoming a best-seller at a Thai milk tea stall in Nanning. Upscale restaurants are introducing durian hotpots and chicken soups, further testament to the fruit's versatility and popularity.

Import Surge

China, the world's largest durian consumer, is increasing its imports, primarily from Southeast Asia. The country imported 1.38 million tons of durians in the first nine months of 2024, with Thailand and Vietnam being the main suppliers.

Future Prospects

With less than 1% of the Chinese population having tasted durian, the market potential is vast. Countries like Indonesia and Laos are eager to tap into this lucrative market, signaling a bright future for the durian industry.
