Supporting Singaporeans in Challenging Times
In a significant move to support its citizens, the Singaporean government has announced the distribution of $220 vouchers to all households. These vouchers, valid until December 31, 2025, are aimed at alleviating the cost-of-living challenges faced by Singaporeans. Half of the vouchers can be used at participating hawker stalls and heartland merchants, while the other half is redeemable at supermarkets.
Expanding the CDC Voucher Scheme
Originally introduced in 2020 to assist lower-income households and support local businesses impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, the CDC voucher scheme was expanded in 2021 to include all households. The initiative has seen overwhelming participation, with 97% of households claiming their vouchers in the previous year. By the end of 2024, 97.5% of these vouchers had been utilized, demonstrating the scheme's effectiveness and the community's support for local businesses.
Widespread Participation and Future Measures
The scheme's success is further highlighted by the participation of 23,000 merchants and eight supermarket chains with nearly 400 outlets. Additionally, around 600 coffee shop stalls have begun accepting CDC vouchers, broadening the scope of the initiative. Deputy Prime Minister Gan Kim Yong emphasized the government's commitment to addressing the cost-of-living concerns, stating, "We have taken several measures to address these concerns, and we stand ready to do more to support Singaporeans."
