Understanding the Fare Adjustment
In a recent update, Singapore has announced a modest increase in public transport fares. Adults will see a 7-cent rise per metro and bus ride, while the hike is only 4 cents for seniors, students, people with disabilities, and low-wage workers who possess concession cards, as reported by The Straits Times.
Payment Methods and Pass Prices
This adjustment applies exclusively to passengers utilizing debit, credit, or fare cards, with cash payments remaining unchanged. Additionally, the prices of monthly concession passes for buses and trains, along with adult monthly travel passes, will stay the same.
Background of the Fare Review
This 6% overall increase in public transport fares was initially disclosed in September by the Public Transport Council during its annual fare review exercise, according to CNA. Despite the maximum allowable adjustment being 18.9%, the council chose a 6% increase to alleviate the financial strain on commuters, reflecting ongoing concerns about the cost of living in Singapore.
Last year, fares saw a 7% increase, translating to 10-11 cents more per trip for adults.
