Rising Air Traffic Demand Boosts Passenger Numbers

Indian airlines carried a total of 1.42 crore passengers on domestic routes in November, marking a significant 12% increase compared to the same period last year. This surge in passenger numbers reflects the growing demand for air travel within the country.

Leading the domestic market share, IndiGo secured 63.6%, followed by Air India with 24.4%. Akasa Air and SpiceJet also saw their shares rise to 4.7% and 3.1% respectively. Alliance Air maintained its 0.7% share, unchanged from the previous month, as reported by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).

The DGCA's latest report highlights that during January-November 2024, domestic airlines carried 1,464.02 lakh passengers, a 5.91% annual growth and 11.90% monthly growth compared to the previous year. November's domestic air passenger traffic stood at 142.52 lakh, up from 127.36 lakh in the same month last year.

Despite the increase in passengers, the On Time Performance (OTP) of scheduled domestic airlines at major airports like Bangalore, Delhi, Hyderabad, and Mumbai showed a decline. IndiGo's OTP was 74.5%, while Akasa Air and SpiceJet recorded 66.4% and 62.5% respectively. Air India and Alliance Air's OTP were at 58.8% and 58.9% respectively.
