Negotiations Hit a Snag
Volkswagen's labor negotiations with its workers have reportedly reached a standstill after four days of talks, according to the Wall Street Journal, citing the union IG Metall. The discussions, which resumed this Monday after weeks of inconclusive discussions, aim to address cost reductions within the German carmaker's domestic operations.
Differing Priorities
Volkswagen is reportedly pushing for pay reductions and capacity cuts to boost its domestic operations, while labor representatives are opposed to factory closures, widespread layoffs, and salary decreases. The union has stated that the talks could fall through as the two sides remain divided on these central issues, despite the "talks being on a constructive path."
Seeking a Pre-Christmas Resolution
The union emphasized its commitment to finding a solution before Christmas, but only if it benefits the workers. "We still want a solution before Christmas, although only one that is good for our colleagues—that only works with a more comprehensive security for jobs, regions, and families," the union said.
