IIT Delhi Alumni Dominate the List of Top Startup Founders

IIT Delhi Leads in Producing Successful Startup Founders

A recent study conducted by Hurun India and IDFC First Bank reveals that approximately one-third of the founders of India's 200 most valuable companies established since the year 2000 are alumni of the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs). Among these, IIT Delhi stands out with 36 founders having graduated from the institution, including notable figures like Sachin and Binny Bansal.

Twenty entrepreneurs graduated from IIT Bombay and another 19 from IIT Kharagpur. The startups founded by these IITians collectively have a combined valuation of about Rs 20 lakh crore, according to Hurun India analysts. Zomato co-founder and CEO Deepinder Goyal, an alumnus of IIT Delhi, ranks second on the list of self-made entrepreneurs.

The growing influence of IITs in fostering new-age entrepreneurs is evident. Institutions like IIT Madras have been instrumental in incubating startups, contributing significantly to the startup ecosystem's growth. The IIT Madras incubation cell, for instance, closed 2023 with a portfolio of 351 deep tech startups with a combined valuation of Rs 45,000 crore.
