Netflix Fined €4.75 Million by Dutch Regulator for Inadequate Data Privacy Disclosure

Netflix Faces Hefty Fine for Data Handling Practices

The Dutch Data Protection Authority has imposed a fine of €4.75 million on Netflix Inc. for failing to provide customers with clear and sufficient information about how their personal data is being used.

According to the watchdog, Netflix's disclosures were unclear regarding the purposes of data collection and usage. The company also neglected to detail what types of data are shared with third parties and the duration for which users' personal data is retained.

Transparency Demanded for Global Corporations

Aleid Wolfsen, Chairman of the Dutch Data Protection Authority, emphasized the need for transparency, especially from large corporations with global reach. "A company like Netflix, with billions in turnover and millions of customers worldwide, must properly explain how it handles personal data," he stated. "This explanation must be crystal clear, particularly when customers inquire about it."
