Netflix Fined by Dutch Watchdog for Privacy Statement Violations

Netflix Faces a €4.75 Million Fine

The Dutch Data Protection Authority (DPA) has imposed a €4.75 million fine on Netflix for failing to adequately inform customers about their data usage between 2018 and 2020. The DPA's investigation, initiated in 2019, revealed that Netflix's privacy statement did not clearly outline the specifics of how customer data was utilized. Additionally, the streaming service provided insufficient information when customers inquired about the data collected by the company. These actions were deemed violations of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

Despite Netflix's subsequent updates to its privacy statement and improvements in its information provision, the company has objected to the fine. As of now, Netflix has not provided a public response to the DPA's decision.
