Emission Testing Requirements for Motorbikes in Vietnam
Starting January 1, motorbikes that are five to 12 years old must undergo emission testing every two years, while those over 12 years old need to be tested annually, according to a decision by the Ministry of Transport.
With 74 million registered motorbikes in the country and an estimated 45 million on the roads daily, the ministry has identified motorbikes as the largest source of pollution. The regulation aims to control emissions, following a 2010 government directive that initially proposed emission testing for at least 80% of vehicles in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City by 2015, though implementation was delayed.
Testing Centers and Implementation
While the regulation takes effect on January 1, the Vietnam Register has not specified when testing centers will begin operations, indicating a potential phased rollout.
