Chinese Kiwi Prices in Vietnam Plummet to Unprecedented Lows

Wholesale Prices Drop to Just VND20,000 per Kilogram

Australian and New Zealand wholesale prices for kiwis typically range from VND60,000 to VND120,000 per kilogram. However, the current price of VND20,000 for Chinese kiwis is remarkably low for a fruit considered a premium item in Vietnam.

Thanh Hoa, a fruit wholesaler in Ho Chi Minh City, noted that these are the lowest prices in years. "I import thousands of boxes at a time to secure the best prices."

Retailers are currently selling the fruit at VND50,000-80,000 per kilogram. Green kiwi is primarily grown in temperate provinces of China such as Sichuan, Shaanxi, and Henan, benefiting from advanced breeding technologies and large-scale production.

Vietnamese importers attribute the low prices to optimized logistics costs. Dang Phuc Nguyen, general secretary of the Vietnam Fruits & Vegetables Association, added that China has acquired kiwi varieties from other countries and breeds them with low labor costs.

Vietnam's imports of Chinese agricultural produce in the first 10 months of the year were worth $800 million, a 24% increase year-on-year, according to the customs department. The main fruits imported were apples, grapes, persimmons, and kiwis.
